Forgiveness is an opportunity for a long lasting friendship.
Since the day Karana was abandoned on the island with her brother, the Aleuts were to blame for the massacre of many of her people. Also, it was the cause that drove all her people to leave the island; leaving her and her younger brother behind. Inside chapters 21-22, a young girl whose name was Tutok, who was also an Aleut, became friends with Karana even though at first Karana felt uncomfortable with her. Since she felt lonely with no one to talk with, she became friends with Tutok; until it was time for her to leave.
Being there alone with her brother they had to survive by hunting. One ordinary day, Karana's brother went hunting. Karana found her brother dead, surrounded by a pack of wild dogs. Only one of the dogs caught her attention, the pack leader (Rontu). Then, in days later on, she spotted Rontu and harmed him with a spear because she had hate towards him for killing her brother. Later on, she felt sorry of what she had done and took care of him. Soon, she gained his confidence and after that he became her friend and companion for years until his death.
Therefore, the secondary theme explains how she forgave Tutok (the Aleut girl) and Rontu (the wild dog) after the harm they caused to her loved ones.
