Captain Orlov is a Russian that came to the Island of the Blue Dolphins along with him crew the Aleuts to hunt otter. His visit established a great impact on all the people of the village, especially Karana the protagonist. Since, he killed her father (chief Chowig) and many other men of her village of Ghalas-At. The whole village had to evacuate and therefore Karana was left behind. As a result, Captain Orlov is considered the antagonist. Since the first time he appeared in the village the whole tribe became suspious of him. Like Karana said on (pg. 4) “… seeing the way he stood with his feet set apart and his fist on his hips and looked at the little harbor as though it already belonged to him… whom our people fear”. This shows that he looked to be tough and bold. The people considered him rare by stating on (pg.4) the fact,” I never seen a Russian before”. In addition Karana also said on (pg. 4)” tall man with yellow beard” and with other characters she didn’t describe their facial features. Also, That toward the end it is confirmed on (pg. 18) Karana quoted “, Captain Orlov had not paid my father for the otter he had killed”, he is a cheater and a cruel person. On (pg.22) Karana said”… Captain Orlov, who had rowed off to the ship when the battled started, returned with more of his Aleuts”. This demonstrates that he is a coward and chose to send more of his men to finish with the tribe. In conclusion, he is considered a flat and static character because since the first time they saw him she gave the feeling the Aleuts and the Russian were the bad guys and stayed this way throughout the story.
