Rontu was the leader of the pack, which first appeared when Ramos died. On page 47 it mentions, "A big gray dog with long curling hair and yellow eyes was their leader and went last." The pack killed her brother. On page 85, it mentions Rontu followed the girl, but when she tried to point at him with the bow he would disappear. On page 89 it says "I was sure that he was an Aleut dog." This means that the Aleuts had forgotten him. It also mentions that he was larger than the other dogs. In page 91, it mentions "He stood facing me, his front legs spread as if he were ready to spring, his yellow eyes narrowed to slits." This means that he isn't afraid of the girl. Rontu means "fox eyes," this was mentioned on page 96. Rontu changed, because after he got shot he was he decided to stay with the girl. The girl had saved him even though she shot him. Later on he was healthier and he could've escaped but didn't. This was mentioned on page 98. On page 108 it mentions, "Rontu was still lying in the grass with his paws under him and I thought he did not see that the other was upon him. " then it mentions, "But crouching there, he suddenly raised himself and at the same time fastened his teeth in the dog's throat." This means that he can manipulate people/animals to believe him, so he won't be able to get hurt, and it also means that he is strong, because he beat the dog.
