The otter on the island symbolize being defenseless. The reason for this is because the Aleuts came to kill them with their weapons. On page 15 it mentions, "It was these creatures that the Aleuts hunted for their pelts." This means that they only killed the otters for to sell and trade their pelts. On page 15 it also mentions, "There are scarcely a dozen left in the beds around coral cove," I said. "Before the Aleuts came there were many." The otters were unable to defend themselves. They were disappearing so quickly because of this reason. The otters symbolize being defenseless because they were dying and couldn't do anything about it; and the Aleuts only wanted them for their pelts.
