Karana is the main character also known as the protagonist. In page 1 it mention “ my brother Ramo was only a little boy half my age, which was twelve.” This quote introduces her brother and it also tells us what Karana age was, 12. The name that Karana would give people was” Won-a-pa-lei” or they would call her the girl with the long black hair.”(page 5). “Looking at his body I knew he should not have told Captain Orlov his secret name,” this means that Karana’s dad died and that she is suspicious. On page 47 it mentions,” When I picked him up I knew that he was dead.” This means that the wild dogs killed Karana’s brother. On page 48 it mentions, “ I vowed that someday I would go back and kill the wild days in the cave.” This means that she changed after her brother’s death and that she became angry. On page 53 it mentions,” For many days I did not think of the weapons again, not until the wild dogs came one night and sat under the rock and howled.” This means that she has been thinking of weapons, since her brother died. It also means that she wants to survive. On page 180 it mentions, “ Not until I came to Mission Santa Barbara and met Father Gonzales did I learn from him that this had sunk in a great storm,” this means that if Karana had gone on the ship she could’ve died.
