On the Island of the Blue Dolphins, everyone is given a secret name. The secret name was a symbol that kept Chief Chowing from having magic in his name. In chapter 2 it mentions that "... everyone in our tribes had two names, the real one and one which was common" that meant that everyone on the island would not use their real name. Captain Orlov must have looked worthy to trust, because Chief Chowing told him his real secret name.
Not realizing that by giving his real name, he showed that he now trusted Captain Orlov, and was later he going to be killed by that person who he gave his real name to. The magic that Chief Chowing was dying. The reason that Captain Orlov killed Chief Chowing was because Chief Chowing refused to let them leave until they had given him his promised fair share of otter. (Page 22)
