The black stone necklace that Tutok gave to Karana while she visited the island is a symbol of their friendship. Karana wears the necklace only on sunny days with her skirt and Rontu. Sunny days remind Karana of all the time she and Tutok spent exchanging words in their different languages and laughing at the unfamiliarity of each word. (Page 136-137) Karana’s skirt of cormorant feathers also reminds her of Tutok because of how much she admired it and described it as wintscha, which means “pretty”. (Page 133) The necklace was made of black stones, which also symbolizes that trusting Tutok would come with unknown consequences, and for this reason, Karana was at first fearful of her. It also symbolizes that Karana struggled to trust Tutok, but Tutok proved herself. Now, Karana will always be able to “hold the memories” of her and Tutok’s friendship.
